Origin distribution:
Native varieties of central and eastern Europe, also growing in other temperate regions of the world
Color/Texture
The pear wood heartwood ranges from light pink to light reddish brown. The sapwood is shallower, but the difference from the heartwood is not very obvious. Pearwood veneer is sometimes smoked to darken the color, and occasionally used to dye instead of ebony. The texture is usually straight and has very good flatness.
Price/Market Supply Situation/Certification (Sustainable Development)
A type of wood that is very popular in Europe, but not in large quantities in the United States. Large trees are usually used for planing and cutting wood bark, and imported wood and bark from Europe are a bit expensive. This variety is not endangered and is not protected by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Notes and comments
The application of pearwood veneer in Europe is similar to that of cherry veneer in the United States, which is very common and of good quality.
